It was official at 5:58 PM on Wednesday March 20, 2019.  Spring arrived.  After a winter of dark, cold and rain, the idea of a sunny weekend at the boat made my feet itch in my wool socks. Saturday, we had the sunshine, but with the wind whipping off the water, we still had our winter coast, gloves and hats. Sunday, we woke to blue skies and calm breezes. The forecast called for mid to high 60s which meant at some point in the day my toes would be free of my socks.

Topside projects were on the agenda. I have been working on the seemingly never-ending project of scraping the peeling varnish off the teak in prep for cleaning, sanding and oiling. The end of scraping is finally is site! For the most part the old varnish is gone.  During the next weekend weather window, phase 2 of cleaning and sanding begins.  Light at the end of the heat gun tunnel.

John’s topside project for the weekend was replacing the lines for the lazy jacks.  This lazy jack system is new to us. To me it looks like a spider web of line. Maybe once we have more time on the water, it will begin to make more sense to me.  As for the replacement lines, John spent much of the weekend splicing. Bonus to this endeavor is that we now have several new dog leashes made from old lines. Wilson and Ori were impressed.

Actually, the crew member that had this best time on the boat this weekend had to be Ori.  I wish I had a picture of her laying at the stern with her paws and face perched on the toerail.  She stayed in that spot all weekend watching the fish jump. While she used to be timid on the boat, this weekend she didn’t want to leave.  The rest of us felt the same way.

It felt good to soak up a little Vitamin D and start to shed the winter blues. Hopefully it will carry us through the near freezing overnight temps of the next couple days.  And I dare I say there is a snowflake in the forecast for the mountains next week.

Spring, we hear you knocking . . . please, do come on in!
